Who is Jesus?
Jesus is God Himself, who took part in a divine and powerful act to remove the weight of all our wrongdoings, the very sins that have separated us from God. Through this act, God made a way for us to experience true life on earth and eternal life in His presence in Heaven.
The reason God sent Himself into the world is profound and mysterious, yet it can be simply understood in this way: the first agreement God established with humanity was no longer sufficient to heal the deep guilt of sin. Long ago, through the prophet Moses, God gave His people rituals and sacrifices meant to atone for sin. But these could never cleanse the heart or bring lasting reconciliation to God. So, in His great love and mercy, God chose to come to earth Himself. He placed His Spirit within a young woman named Mary, and she gave birth to a son, Jesus.
When Jesus reached the age of thirty, God’s plan for the world began to unfold publicly. Jesus started to preach, revealing the truth about God and demonstrating it through miracles, compassion, and power. The wonders He performed were so abundant that, as Scripture says, the world itself could not contain all the books needed to record them.
At the age of thirty-three, the time came for God’s plan of redemption to be fulfilled so that all humanity could be reconciled to Him. Our sins had weighed heavily upon us, filling our hearts with guilt and shame. Out of His immeasurable love, Jesus willingly allowed Himself to be falsely accused, unjustly condemned, and cruelly beaten. Yet through it all, He remained sinless, blameless, so that He could bear the punishment we ourselves deserved.
Only a perfect and innocent sacrifice could accomplish this big purpose.
When Jesus was crucified and died upon the cross, He bore everything you and I have done. He took our punishment upon Himself because He wanted us to have a way out that bad. On the third day after He was hung on the cross, Jesus resurrected, resulting in the conquering of sin and death once and for all. This resurrection became the most powerful act in all of history, the very establishment of salvation.
Through His resurrection, the door of salvation was opened to everyone. Now, all who believe that God sent Jesus to die and rise again can receive forgiveness and be restored to a living relationship with God. All that is required is believing God in your heart and confessing that with your mouth.
